Description
"Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly." — Langston Hughes
My marker drawing of herons reflects connection, sorrow, and loneliness. Birds are traditionally viewed as symbols of freedom in art and literature; however, in my work, birds reside in a suspended space of grief. Lines overlap, remain unfinished, or visually fade from the paper. Through these connections, tension builds, and conflict is framed within its frayed edges. Pursuit of visual impact that rewards both close-up observation and appreciation from a distance is my main intent. Through the animals’ perspectives, an interpretation of both community and loss is presented. The audience is left to wonder whether birds can fly away from the weight of the moment or remain in their grief forever.
