Abstract
The use of seclusions and restraints in public schools is a controversial topic in education that has gained much media attention in the past few decades. Most scholars, educators, and policy-makers are in agreement that it should be used as little as possible, due to its potential for serious harm or even death of the students being subjected to it. In order to inform educators on how to reduce the use of seclusions and restraints, a review of the literature was conducted on what the best practices are, and what types of oversight and accountability measures need to be in place to enforce the widespread adoption of those best practices. Conclusions are that there are generally agreed upon practices that have already been implemented with success in some schools throughout the public education system, but that the widespread implementation of these practices has not happened due to the lack of federal legislation that mandates their adoption.
