Abstract

This literature review was designed to answer the question: What is the effect of dual language immersion (DLI) programs on English learner (EL) language acquisition and academic success? The studies selected for this review focus on the academic and lingual successes of ELs when enrolled in a DLI program. It identifies potential challenges to be eradicated from the DLI educational model, including teacher or administrative misconceptions and aspects of inequality. Overall, the literature shows that students enrolled in a DLI program perform at a level comparable to or greater than that of their non-DLI peers on both language and content area assessments.
