Abstract
This literature review with application emphasis examines the history and impact of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for limited and non-verbal communicators with developmental disabilities. Research targets AAC implementation by the AAC user, family, and educational staff, effective interventions, and barriers to AAC use. A three-part application project was created to increase AAC communication opportunities for students with developmental disabilities. The project includes training for paraeducators, a survey for parents or guardians, and a communication profile that serves as a tool for peers and staff to target communication opportunities for a variety of purposes during a school day.
