Abstract
Physical activity is extensively recognized as an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. For children, it is important for the development of their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional well-being. Nationally, there are physical activity recommendations for youth; however, most children and adolescents do not meet these recommendations. It’s recommended that youth participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily. However, many youth are not achieving this recommendation due to physical, environmental, and social barriers. The purpose of this thesis was to look at the relationship between physical activity, executive functioning, and academic performance among youth. Peer-reviewed literature was reviewed to identify the cognitive and academic benefits associated with physical activity, barriers impacting physical activity, and evidence-based strategies to help increase physical activity participation. It was consistently found that participation in physical activity regularly improved executive functioning in the areas of attention, working memory, inhibitory control, and academic performance. The importance of inclusive opportunities, family support, adaptive equipment, and school-based programs was found to help increase physical activity levels for youth with and without disabilities. Additional research needs to be completed to determine the long-term effects of specific interventions across multiple populations. Overall, the findings suggest that physical activity can lead to physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. Educators, professionals, and parents can use this information to help encourage a healthy lifestyle that promotes development.
