Abstract
This dissertation examined the need for effective assessment methods to evaluate narcissistic leadership traits in Christian congregations in the Minneapolis area and the consequential effects of these traits on assemblies, as perceived by the congregations. This study addressed growing concerns about destructive leadership behaviors that compromise spiritual well-being, organizational trust, and biblical paradigms of servant leadership, as exemplified by Jesus. Employing an interdisciplinary framework that includes the theological, psychological, and leadership studies literatures, the research examined the expression of narcissistic traits by ecclesiastical leaders and ministers and how these tendencies are perceived by congregants and attendees. Qualitative and quantitative research designs were implemented, incorporating semi-structured interviews and structured surveys to elicit empirical data. Results showed that widely used psychological instruments often overlook the spiritual and relational factors important in ministerial settings. The social and behavioral sciences perspective is also often neglected or devalued by churches when determining leadership. A biblically informed evaluation framework is therefore offered in the study, emphasizing character development and spiritual maturity and preserving empirical reliability. By combining theological discernment and psychological assessment, this research contributed to practical theology by developing an integrative approach to assess pathological narcissistic traits in church leadership. This dissertation equips churches with strategic tools to foster accountability, emotional health, and Christ-centered leadership, thereby building congregations of integrity, humility, and spiritual vitality.
