Abstract
This project addressed finding meaning and value in old age. The research conducted explored barriers to achieving meaning and value and how to overcome those obstacles. The research specifically focused on senior adults who reside in a Christian-based assisted living home located in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. In response to this problem, the researcher studied the lives of three older biblical characters, Jacob, the author of Psalm 71, and Anna, and reviewed relevant literature on barriers senior citizens face today. In addition, research included the damaging effects older adults face when they fail to find meaning in their lives and current strategies for effective ministry to older adults. Next, a qualitative case study was conducted where each resident in the assisted living home was given an opportunity to complete a survey, and eight people were selected to participate in an interview. The data gained was organized, analyzed, and synthesized to provide an understanding of the needs of residents in assisted living homes. The study revealed that senior adults, both in biblical times and today, find meaning and value in old age when they maintain meaningful relationships with people and with God, stay active, are given support as they journey through grief due to loss, and are offered assurance when they encounter fears. It has also been shown that effective ministry to older adults who reside in a Christian-based assisted living home include pastoral care, encouraging residents to stay involved in activities, and providing support through challenging times. The study concluded with the acknowledgement that true meaning and value in life is based on God’s unconditional love for humanity.
