The Historicity of the Early Oral Jesus Tradition: Reflections on the ‘Reliability Wars'
Document Type
Book Chapter
Abstract
Jesus was an itinerant Jewish teacher who proclaimed the kingdom of God in both word and deed, but not in script. This observation explains both the importance of the oral Jesus tradition within the early church (visible in statements from Paul to Papius and beyond) and the relevance of orality and memory studies for Jesus scholarship today. Given that other essays in this volume engage contemporary memory studies, this essay will be devoted to the orality/oral tradition side of things.
