Abstract

This thesis will explore the significance of visual arts education in the academic and personal development of students during their school years. It aims to define the critical role of visual arts education in enhancing students' academic journeys and overall well-being. It addresses two driving questions: How does visual arts education support students' overall academic achievement? How does visual arts education contribute to students' social and emotional mental wellness throughout their academic years? This is done through the review of existing research and literature on these subjects. This thesis begins by defining visual arts education and its impact on early learners, highlighting improvements in academic performance. It then explores how visual arts education fosters self-esteem and intrinsic motivation, with a focus on grading and assessment practices. Lastly, this thesis examines the role of art as a universal language, its influence on community engagement, and its encouragement of creativity and divergent thinking. The nurturing and development of the whole child has become increasingly important. This thesis examines how visual arts education can serve as a vital platform for achieving this goal.
